Skateboarding Tips for Beginners: Your Ultimate Guide to Getting Started

Welcome to the exciting world of skateboarding! Whether you're just starting out or looking to improve your skills, OCD Skate Shop is here to help. As a beginner, it's important to start with the right gear and guidance. In this blog, we’ll cover essential tips for beginners, from choosing your first skateboard to staying safe, while linking to top products from our website, www.ocdskateshop.com.au.

1. Choosing Your First Skateboard

Your skateboard is the most important piece of equipment when you're learning, so make sure to pick one that matches your style and ability level.

  • Deck: A good deck is essential for stability. If you're unsure about size, start with something around 8.0” wide for a balance of control and maneuverability.

  • Wheels: Smaller wheels (50mm–54mm) are ideal for street skating and beginners because they are easier to control.

  • Trucks: Trucks are the metal parts that connect the wheels to the board. Start with trucks that are the same width as your deck for stability.

2. Pre-Built Complete Skateboards

If you’re just starting out, a pre-built complete skateboard is a great option. These boards are fully assembled, so you don’t have to worry about picking the right trucks, wheels, or hardware separately.

  • Complete Skateboards: We carry a wide selection of pre-built complete skateboards from top brands like Santa Cruz and Creature. These are perfect for beginners because they come ready to skate right out of the box, giving you the perfect balance of durability and performance for learning.

Whether you're skating in the park or on the street, these complete boards offer excellent control and stability, making them an ideal choice for riders still mastering the basics.

3. Don’t Forget Safety Gear

Skateboarding is fun, but it’s also important to stay safe. Make sure to equip yourself with the right safety gear, especially when you’re just starting.

  • Helmet: A good helmet is a must! It will protect your head from falls and bumps. We carry a variety of helmets at OCD Skate Shop designed specifically for skaters.

  • Pads: Elbow and knee pads can save you from scrapes and bruises when you’re learning. These are especially helpful when you're practicing tricks or riding on ramps.

4. Learn the Basics: Stance, Pushing, and Stopping

Now that you're geared up, it’s time to hit the pavement! Here are a few basics every beginner should know:

  • Stance: There are two main stances in skateboarding—regular (left foot forward) and goofy (right foot forward). Try both to see which one feels more natural.

  • Pushing: Practice pushing off with your back foot while keeping your front foot on the board. Keep your balance and try to get comfortable with this movement.

  • Stopping: Learning how to stop is just as important as learning how to go. For beginners, the easiest method is the foot brake—dragging your back foot on the ground.

5. Start Simple: Learn the Ollie

Once you feel comfortable cruising, it’s time to learn some basic tricks. The ollie is the first trick every skateboarder should learn. It involves popping the tail of your board and sliding your front foot forward to lift the board into the air.

  • Skate Shoes: Wearing the right shoes can make a big difference in your learning process. Our Skate Shoes Collection features durable options designed for grip and comfort, helping you master tricks like the ollie.

6. Practice Makes Perfect

The most important advice for beginners is to practice consistently. It can be frustrating at first, but keep going! Find a safe spot to practice, like a smooth street or local skate park, and focus on mastering the basics.

7. Stay Motivated with Skate Gear
