The Story of China Banks
The China Banks in San Francisco are one of skateboarding’s most iconic and legendary street spots. Located under the bridge along Kearny Street, these red brick slanted ledges and curved banks were never meant for skating—but they became a proving ground for generations of skaters. Since the late '70s, pioneers like Tommy Guerrero, Mark Gonzales, and later Dennis Busenitz and Omar Salazar have pushed boundaries there, turning the tight transitions, rough surfaces, and natural curves into a playground for creative lines and gritty control. Despite occasional crackdowns and physical barriers added to prevent skating, the China Banks remain a symbol of raw street skate culture and an enduring monument to skateboarding’s rebellious spirit.
